7 Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning Your Landscape

So you’re thinking about an outdoor space, we are excited for you and happy to help with any questions you may have! An outdoor space is an investment and a decision you’ve probably thought about for a long time, we understand that. It is also a very smart investment, particularly if you love to be out in your yard. Each and every person or family has their own expectations and desires for their yard and many don’t know how to make it all fit. That’s where Envisioning Green comes in. Our team of designers are there to help you every step of the way. From color schemes to layout and everything in between, they have the experience and the knowledge to make your dreams a reality. We always send out clients a questionnaire before the initial meeting but here are a few very important questions to consider before you meet:

  • What am I using my space for? What are the major requirements of the space?

Is this a place to hang out with friends? A place for you and your spouse? Do you need privacy? Maybe a place for your children to play? There are so many uses for an outdoor space and they are different for most families. Some of the requirements that we’ve experienced are the previously mentioned children’s play area, privacy/screening, safety and security (which would be lighting and low plantings), dog areas, outdoor entertaining, gardening, and a shady retreat area. This is just the beginning of the list and we could go on and on. Your space has to be functional and right for your family so let us know your ideas!

  • What features are a must have in my yard?

We offer a lot of features here at Envisioning Green. We’re proud to install patios, outdoor rooms, outdoor kitchensretaining walls, driveways, fireplaces or firepits, pizza ovens, pergolas/cabanas/arbors, water features, and much more. Want to be outside but not miss the game? We’ve got you covered with our outdoor audio/visual department. Need some landscape lighting? We can do that too.

  • What funds do I have allocated to this project? How much does an outdoor kitchen or space cost?

Now for the part that no one wants to talk about, money. These spaces do cost money and we want to be able to stay within your allowance. That being said, when we ask, please give us your realistic budget so that we can work our best within that. One of the things that our designers are best at is working not only on a budget but making sure that you get what you want within that. Oftentimes, they will help you come up with different stages of the project to do over a period of time to help you stay on track but also get the yard of your dreams. They will make sure that each stage is the most cost effective and will do whatever they can in each stage to save you money in the long run. At the same time, if your estimated funds are unrealistic, they will let you know that as well. We aren’t here to pull the wool over your eyes, we want to be upfront and real.

  • How many people do I usually entertain? What type of furniture do you ENVISION in your space?

This is HUGE! Our designers will design an area differently for a client who has small dinner parties or for a client who has very large gatherings. This absolutely comes back to how are you going to use the space. If you have small gatherings, you may not want or need a large patio space, you may want smaller spaces for chairs and tables and obvious conversation areas. If you have large parties, you may want a large patio space with lots of room for tables and chairs and a bar food.

  • Is there any other information I would like the designers to know?

You would be surprised on how much of an answer we get with this question. It may seem broad and vague but sometimes that’s the best way to get an answer and a true insight into what someone is really envisioning (see what I did there?). Oftentimes, a guided question doesn’t allow for so much creative thinking. Allow yourself to dream and let us do the rest.
